"SummAry Of mAx schuLmAn's LOv E is a fALLAcy"

The story “Love is a Fallacy” by Max Schulman is a story about a smart and intelligent 18 year old guy. He is also described as logical, keen, calculating, perspicacious, acute and astute. With these descriptions, we can say he is really an intelligent guy.

In the University, he has a roommate named Petey Bellows. They have the same background and the same age. But he describes him as dumb as an ok. Petey Bellows is also a nice enough fellow. Petey Bellows is unstable, impressionable and a faddist. One afternoon I found Petey Bellows with his distress looked face that the narrator diagnosed appendicitis. "Don't move," the narrator said. "Don't take a laxative. I'll get a doctor." Then, Petey mumbled “Raccoon”. Then the narrator asked Petey Bellows why Petey Bellows did say “Raccoon”. Petey Bellows said he wants a raccoon coat because all of the big men here in the campus are wearing them. The narrator said that raccoon coats are heavy and they smell bad but Petey didn't listen. He kept pleading that he has to have one. He'll do anything for it. Then, the narrator came up with a plan. He remembered that his dad owned a raccoon coat back at home and he might be able to give it to Petey Bellows but it has an exchange. He wants Polly Espy. He thought that she is the perfect girl to be his wife. She has beauty; she is graceful and has right manners. Only, she is dumb. But at the back of the narrator's mind, he thought that it would be easier to make a dumb girl smart than to make an ugly lady beautiful.

Petey agreed with the deal. After all, they are going steady yet they only go out and date but not yet anything serious. He gave Petey the coat and Petey happily wore it.

When the narrator first dated with Polly Espy, he taught her about logic. For five nights, all that they have been talking about is LOGIC. Polly actually enjoyed the different fallacies being discussed by the narrator. When the narrator reviewed Polly Espy about what they have been lecturing, Polly has been very good in recalling the different fallacies.

When the narrator told Polly Espy, that he loves her, Polly just answered with the different fallacies that the narrator has been teaching her. The narrator told her that he doesn't have to apply the fallacies all the time in her everyday life since these fallacies are only taught inside a four-walled room. Polly Espy still did not listen and continued to answer by using different more fallacies. Then Polly Espy told the narrator that she is going to get steady with Petey Bellows. The narrator that why of all people, Polly Espy would get steady with someone like Petey Bellows. He seems to have no plans in life. Then Polly Espy told him that he wants to go steady with Petey Bellows because Petey Bellows has a Raccoon coat.
